You can uninstall Windows 10 a few different ways if you have upgraded and decide you do not like it, or if you were automatically upgraded by Microsoft through Windows Update.

You have thirty days to revert your Operating System back to its previous version using the Recovery mode in Windows 10. But there are other ways to go back if time has expired.

Uninstall Windows 10 Using Recovery Mode

You can access the Recovery option in Windows 10 by typing “Recovery” in the search box near the start button.
If you have been using Windows 10 for less than a month, you will see an option to go back to your previous Operating System.
Your computer will then proceed to uninstall Windows 10 and, hopefully, revert you back to Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Use The Built-In Recovery Partition To Go Back To Factory Default

If your thirty-day Window has expired, you can use the built-in recovery partition if you have a computer made by a major brand name, such as Dell, HP, Sony, etc.

The Windows 10 upgrade should have left the recovery partition intact when it installed, so you should be able to boot to a recovery partition and revert the computer back to its original setup.

Reinstall Windows 7 or Windows 8 from Scratch

If your computer has a Windows sticker with the key code on it, or if you have a genuine Windows disk with an enclosed key, you can boot to the DVD and reinstall Windows 7 or Windows 8 from scratch.
If you have the key but not the physical media to install Windows, you can download Windows directly from Microsoft at their Software Recovery Center.

You will want to have the motherboard drivers–or at least the network card drivers–on physical media before you install Windows.

You want to be able to get onto the Internet to download drivers or run Windows Update, which with find and install the drivers for you.

Restore Your Operating System Using A Disk Image

If your had the foresight to create a system image prior to upgrading the Operating System, you can boot to the recovery disk you created and load the disk image.

If you have not yet upgraded, use a program such as Macrium Reflect Free to create an image and store it on an external hard drive. You can then unplug the external drive and keep it safely off to the side when upgrading to Windows 10.


Keep in mind it is always best to prepare for a major upgrade like this, if possible. While Windows makes it easy to uninstall Windows 10 and revert back to your previous Operating System, it can be devastating if the process goes wrong. Make a system image, if possible, and always make sure you have your data backed up to an external drive prior to upgrading.
